Nootropics: How They Can Help You De-Stress & Much More

  • 2 min read

You’ve probably heard the term nootropics or seen them on the ingredient labels of a few of our most popular NBPure products. And you may be wondering what they are and what they do. Here’s the scoop on nootropics.

The word nootropics comes from two Greek words: nöos, which means thinking, and tropein, which means to guide. Nootropics refers generally to any substance that may help to guide thinking or brain activity.

While there are some nootropics that are prescription medications (Ritalin is a common one), others are stimulants (e.g., caffeine is a nootropic). And some nootropics like ashwagandha have stress-relieving benefits.

At NBPure all the nootropics we use are natural, plant-based, and pure because that’s the heart of who we are.

Top 4 Nootropics

Here’s a guide to the nootropics we use — and why we use them. You’ll find all in our Multi Guard+ daily multivitamin and Power Down supplement for relaxation and better sleep.

Ashwagandha, or withania somnifera, is an evergreen shrub that also goes by the name winter cherry or Indian ginseng. Its roots and leaves are harvested and dried. Ashwagandha is a nootropic that’s also known as an adaptogen because it helps the body better adapt to stress. It’s also been shown to help reduce anxiety and relax the body, why it may help you get better sleep.

Rhodiola, or rhodiola rosea, is a perennial wild flowering plant. Its roots are used as nootropics. It’s been shown in research to help reduce anger, anxiety, stress, and confusion.

L-theanine is an amino acid found in tea like green tea, as well as some mushrooms. Some studies have found that it has a calming effect on the brain and the body, without causing drowsiness. Other studies have found that it may help boost alertness

Bacopa Monnieri is a perennial flowering herb that seems to help your brain work better. This herb contains compounds called bacosides that have been shown to help improve signaling in the area of the brain that processes memories.

Brain-Boosting Antioxidants

In our Multi Guard+, you’ll also find resveratrol and CoQ10. Resveratrol is an antioxidant found in grapes, blueberries, cranberries, and dark chocolate. Some studies have found that it may help memory and mood, particularly as we get older.

CoQ10 is also an antioxidant. While your body produces it, it starts producing less of it as we age. In the body, CoQ10 helps provide energy to cells and it also helps protect cells, including those in the brain, from something called oxidative stress.

Keep in mind that when you reduce stress, you’re also helping your gut. Stress can trigger gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, constipation, indigestion, and more. When you’re less stressed, many of these symptoms may be relieved.
